our weekend
the dps is seriously cutting into our daddy time lately. brad has had to stay in austin 3 of the past 4 weekends. thankfully, we were still able to see him for 2 of those thanks to my awesome aunt & uncle who offered up their austin house to us for the weekend.
this weekend, however, we were on our own. brad was occupied with academy duties until 5 pm on saturday and the thought of a 5 hour drive (round-trip) to get approximately 5 hours of quality time seemed a bit much. (although i'm now questioning my logic.)
mason and i found a few ways to occupy our time - and a lot of it was spent with our friends katie and avery (and ryan too on saturday!) it was a rough week at work for me and by friday i felt like i was lucky to be still standing. katie and avery came to the rescue with a pizza picnic in the park by our house where the kiddos played (and finally ate) while i had the fantastic distraction of adult conversation not related to the chemisphere.
saturday, mason and i went to the little gym, then ran errands and grocery shopped before hitting the bed for a much-needed nap. we finished off the day at the scream on the green event at the woodlands umc and attended the saturday night service at the loft. it was a fun day, but filled with more than one semi-sad moment as we wished brad (aka daddy) could join us.
today's been pretty low-key. we spent some time at the park and have just hung around the house while i've tackled the weekend laundry (how on earth do we end up with so much between friday and sunday?!)
we're down to the last 5 weeks of the academy and we're praying they fly by. we've done pretty well so far, but it's really getting old! hurry up nov. 18!!

the great pumpkin adventure
it's a pumpkin tradition! last year, we visited the old time christmas tree farm to check out the pumpkin patch. we had such a great time, we did it again - with the same dear friends!

and you thought your day was bad
today was "oc" day at the academy... also known as mace in the face, followed by running through an obstacle course, and fending off an attacker. i don't have a before, but the after photos sure make me think that my day was a piece of cake...
their eyes are swollen and they can hardly see, but they all survived. way to go b class!

how old are you?
tonight was one of those nights that i felt like i flashed forward 11 years or so and saw mason as a teenager. you know, those moments when they just act older than you think they should and you wonder how on earth you can bottle up all of this now to cherish later.
after a spontaneous (and fun!) dinner out with katie and avery, mason and i stopped by target to pick up some much-needed diapers. i was sidetracked by the toddler t-shirts when i heard mason talking with another adult. i looked up and saw that he had spotted one of his school friends and was "chatting" with his friend's mom. he kept looking at his buddy boston and saying "boston! boston! hi!" it was adorable and i was pretty impressed that he not only recognized, but called out his friend's name. boston's mom and i introduced ourselves and parted ways while mason called out "bye bye boston!" as we walked away.
the real teenager moment came when we arrived home. in the past few days, mason has decided that he really likes to get out of the car by himself. of course, the only time i let this happen is when we are safely in the garage with the door down. i went ahead and unlocked the house and brought my purse and bag in while mason "drove" and exited. i checked on him as i headed to start his bath and when i walked back by the back door, mason had exited the car, closed the car door, come into the house and was pushing the door closed. i then watched as he made his way to the kitchen, opened the refrigerator, grabbed a slice of cheese (a favorite snack at the moment), and looked at me and said "want cheese." seriously, i expect that from a teenager - not my two year old!
thank goodness he asked to be rocked tonight, or i'd really have my lip stuck out! my, my they grow up fast!

so much potential, so little cooperation
it was a perfect fall day in austin today - blue skies, high 70s, so we meandered to the state capitol grounds to enjoy the park. the camera was ready and i was hoping to get some decent shots of mason. so much potential, so little cooperation...
he just kept saying "no!" and running away. not a single one smiling and looking in the camera. oh well, at least it was a gorgeous day! :)
dog & pony show
my former boss (insert sad face) won the table prize at a chamber gala which was a giant stuffed dog. he's a huge dog lover and felt that since cassie is no longer with us, mason really needed a dog. he brought this giant golden retriever to work one day with instructions for me to give it to mason. mason was thrilled.
the next morning, mason carried the giant dog to the kitchen, then went to the living room for the pony. once everyone was settled, they enjoyed a lovely breakfast of cereal bar and milk. who knew he was already well-versed in dog and pony shows?!
one tired mommy...
... equals one terrible blogger. sorry for the lack of posts lately. in case anyone was wondering, we are a equal opportunity household and with one half gone, it makes for a lot left over! the 45 minutes per night i have to myself is typically spent doing dishes, laundry, next-day meal planning, and here lately, catching up on the work laptop. there hasn't been a whole lot left for blogging.
one day i'll catch up on our trip to hilton head, granny & papa's visit, two trips to austin to visit brad, and a host of other random events that you haven't heard about. until then, it will probably be onesy, twosy until brad is once again a regular inhabitant in our house! for those of you counting with us, we've got 7 weeks left!
