a little bit afraid of the dark
we're approaching the 8 week mark for little bit and the past couple of weeks have had some up and downs in the nighttime sleeping routine. madison has dropped one nighttime feeding, so i'm really only getting up once at night (yay!) and she's pretty consistently sleeping for 5 or 6 hour stretches.
for several nights in a row, though, she screamed every time we put her down. and by scream, i mean SCREAM. everyone has their own parenting style, and while neither brad nor i enjoy hearing a baby scream, we do try to let her work it out before running in (this is of course, after we've already tried all the majors - feeding, burping, diaper changing and a bit of rocking). if she's still crying after all that, we let her cry.
after a particularly brutal night of crying from 11 pm to 2 am (she would be fine when i picked her up, but as soon as i put her back down she'd start crying again within 5 minutes), a thought occurred to me the next morning. madison sleeps fine during the day, napping in her crib, or her seat, or even the swing, so what was the difference at night? the answer was a darkened room.
i tested the theory the next night and after i fed her, i put her in her bed, switched on her lamp, and held my breath as i walked out of the room. 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, all was quiet. i kept switching on the video monitor to check in on her and she was sound asleep. night 1 was a success!
for the past week, i've left her lamp on at night (it's a bit tacky since i have it placed on the floor so it doesn't shine in her face with her crib mattress up so high) and we've had zero issues with madison going to sleep. turns out our little bit was just a little bit afraid of the dark!

the grumpy snowman
in 2007, i saw the cutest little outfit at the junior league market while shopping with my friend kimberly. i took a picture of it and dreamed of the day that i might be able to recreate something similar for a photo op for my little girl (if i ever had one).
my friend katie surprised me with the outfit at my baby shower. "ooh this is going to be perfect!," i thought.
between the lighting being all wrong and a screaming-her-head-off-baby, it was an epic fail.

oh well. we tried, right?

show me your muscles
madison's already learned that you gotta be tough to survive this house!
just moments after this photo was taken i found myself saying "do NOT blow your nose on your sister!" yep, gotta be tough.
fight club
mason fought the bed
and the bed won.
while climbing into bed 2 nights ago, mason slipped and hit his face on the corner of the footboard. ouch. photo one is the day after; photo 2 is today. i'm pretty sure this is our first official black eye.
baby book
dear madison,
mommy has always kept this blog as a sort of online baby book for mason and now you. please don't judge that the lack of entries thus far is part of the "second child syndrome." it is not that. it has been a mad house around here. your brother is wild, but he isn't behind the lack of posts. mommy has been sick more in the last 2 months than she has in the past 2 years. it started the week before you were born and has continued into late december and now january. you see, in an effort to provide you with all the nutrients you need, mommy has managed to wind up with two rounds of infection, 3 weeks apart. because i have found it impossible to function with fevers reaching 104, you will now be drinking formula and i promise to take more photos.
i will also admit that when i have been well, i've been on the quest for perfect photos. guess what? i've yet to take one. or anything close. so, as part of the promise to take more photos, i will post those that don't pass the perfect test, but do represent the present reality.
i love you!
all my heart,
mommy

1 month
my how time flies! madison turned one month old today and we celebrated with a trip to the doctor for her well check-up. she weighed in at 10 pounds, 2 ounces (75 percentile) and measured 23 inches tall (98 percentile).
mommy and daddy are still adjusting to life with a newborn and a very rambunctious 3 year old. it's been a couple of wild weeks with mommy getting knocked down with illness beginning christmas day, daddy getting ready to go back to work, and mason wondering why on earth his parents aren't raring to go when he wakes up each morning at 7 am! madison seems oblivious to it all and eats every 3 hours, pretty much on the dot.
our little bit is starting to stay awake more and loves gazing into our eyes. she remains unbothered by her brother's craziness, which is undeniably a God-given trait. i still haven't been able to get a photo of her with her eyes open, which at this point, are blue! and it turns out that those adorable cheeks aren't just for looks. she also likes to fill her cheeks with milk and spit it out at you when you least expect it. we've coined this act "chipmunking" and, depending on the position of the burp cloth, laugh when she does it.
we are blessed, but definitely still in a fog trying to find our groove. here's a few pictures of our cutie on her one month birthday.
