no matter where we go on vacation, there always seems to be a story or two that just sticks with you and provides years of entertainment looking back. sometimes it takes a few hours, days, or even weeks, before you can see the humor in the situation. our trip to new york had one of these...
when mason, grammy and i took the train to montauk, the plan was for the boys to have an early tee time and meet up with us shortly after we arrived at the train station. kasey, korey and tanner were going to load up in the car and drive to montauk so we could wander around town without worrying about catching the last train back to southampton. great plan.
but like many great plans, it's all in the execution.
the boys' tee time was 7:42 am. they left the house in plenty of time and all systems were a go.
grammy, mason and i bought tickets for the 10:10 am train to montauk. the train pulled into the station at 10:12 and we loaded up for a fun ride. so far, so good. we arrived in montauk at 10:53 am. uncle g had informed us the night before that the village was just a "5 minute or so stroll" from the train station, so we grabbed the stroller and followed the signs toward the village.
grammy and i noticed that there were quite a few taxis waiting at the train station, but we thought "if it's just a short stroll, we'll just walk." within minutes, all the taxis were gone, so it was just as well that we opted for the walk.
grammy mentioned that finding a potty would be nice, so she asked at the train station, where some quite snooty new yorkers informed her that the depot was an "art gallery" not a rest stop for train riders. hmm, excuse me, but i'm pretty sure the train just dropped us off moments ago and it's really not an unreasonable request to think that there's a restroom nearby. but i digress.
we were sent instead to a restaurant across the road, which was closed. great.
so, with a pep in our step, mostly motivated by thoughts of a nearby potty, we started walking toward the village.
about 3 minutes into our walk, we noticed that the road didn't seem to be very "walker friendly." in other words, we were trekking along the side of a major road, which some might even call a highway. perfect.
5 minutes into our walk we passed a mechanic's shop where someone was standing outside. we asked him where the village was and he said, "you see that building down the road?" that's it. we could see our landmark, so we were encouraged to keep going.
2 seconds later, mason said, "mommy, i need to go potty!" hmm... not prepared. "well, at least he's a boy," i thought. "we'll make this work." i pulled the stroller off to the side of the road and unbuckled mason. we positioned ourselves in the available shrubbery and i proceeded to instruct him in how to potty without the conveniences of a bathroom. easier said than done, apparently. after a prolonged period of time with no action, mason ended up naked from the waist down, except for his socks, while i desperately tried to coach him on peeing standing up (we're still sitting at home) and not getting his only pair of socks wet. it took a while, but we succeeded. meanwhile i was praying that new york didn't have some obscure law outlawing naked toddlers on the side of the road. as i helped him get dressed again, i looked at my mom and said, "clearly this is a skill that requires practice and i am not adequately equipped to teach him!" so, if you ever catch mason urinating in our backyard, please know that it is necessary practice for moments like this! (i will put a 2 year statue of limitations on it... surely he won't still need to practice when he's in high school!)
we continued on our journey. at this point, it was about 11:20 am, so we decided to check in with our meet-up buddies. a quick call to the golf course informed us that the boys were "making excellent time." after nearly 4 hours of golfing, they were on the 12th hole. yeah, not that excellent.
our second call was to korey, kasey and tanner. they hadn't left home yet.
it didn't look like we would be rescued from our "5 minute stroll" any time soon, so we pressed on in the 96 degree heat. the building that i thought the man from the mechanic's shop pointed at was someone's house. then i realized that the building he was actually pointing to was about 2 miles further down the road.
we continued our journey.
when our flip-flop-clad-crew finally arrived at the village, we were hot, exhausted and still had to pee. so naturally we found the yuckiest bathroom available and then found a spot for lunch. at this point, we didn't really care if anyone joined us or not! we arrived around noon. so much for the 5 minute stroll! :)
everyone eventually did join us around 12:30, we enjoyed lunch and then strolled around the village scoring a few t-shirts and some ice cream. grammy and i laughed about our adventure (really, we did!_ and decided that we had officially taken our last train to montauk...
